As we kiss the most recent polar vortex goodbye, we turn our attention back to the spectacular winter season here in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. While most families escape to our tranquil natural wilderness for skiing adventures on Gunstock Mountain, we always encourage our guests to think outside the box during the wintertime by trying some underrated winter activities. And the best way to warm up after a full day of Lakes Region exploration is by retreating to one of our cozy, modern Lake Winnipesaukee rentals. Bayside Rentals has over 100 lake homes, cottages, condos, and cabin rentals in NH, just minutes from these three midwinter activities.
The lost art of snowshoeing has slowly resurfaced as a popularized winter activity yet again as outdoor enthusiasts began to grasp the peaceful allure. There is a seemingly endless array of snowshoeing possibilities throughout the Lakes Region, which should come as no surprise. There is a handful of regional parks that we often recommend to our guests. The Loon Center and Markus Wildlife Sanctuary is a 200-acre preserve on the north end of Lake Winnipesaukee where you’ll discover two miles of snowshoe trails. The Hamlin Recreation and Conservation Area has three trails that meander through lush forestry and lead to scenic vistas of Wickwas Lake and the surrounding mountains. Waukewan Highlands Community Park has friendly wildlife, marked trails, and a serene pond, plus it’s only minutes from most of our lakefront cabin rentals in NH.
The annual Great Meredith Rotary Ice Fishing Derby returns for its 40th year in early February with a $15,000 prize going to the winner. This annual derby seems to remind our guests that ice fishing is actually one of the best winter activities in the area. We typically see dozens of families return to the Lakes Region for ice fishing adventures in the weeks following the derby. We have nearly 250 lakes within an hour of our Lake Winnipesaukee real estate – they don’t call us the Lakes Region for nothing! Lake Winnipesaukee is home to several fish species, including beautiful rainbow trout, massive pickerel, and rare cusk.
There is an intricate, interconnected snowmobile trail system that meanders throughout our tranquil state. This extensive map, which is curated by the NH Snowmobile Association, displays every open and closed trail in the entire state. If you’re staying in the Lakes Region, you’ll have easy access to Lake Winnipesaukee, the “Bear Notch” system, and dozens of quintessential small towns.
